Self Portrait as Saint George is an essentially classical project by Nicholaas Chiao. The figure of a man appears strong and confident, with a much more athletic, exaggerated body type than the artist's in reality; it is idealized. The artist is holding a golden stick in his left hand high above his head. For his entire life, the artist had a religious dream of becoming a prophet, like Jesus Christ, and Saint George is a leader who is approaching the role of a prophet. The majority of people will recognize it as grandiosity. Yet, even amidst these lofty aspirations, the artist recognizes the gap between such pursuits and his objective self, which softly whispers the value of humility and perseverance. It is this acknowledgment that transforms his ambition into a relatable quest for transcendence, allowing even a grand plan to be realized, step by step, over the decades.
