Artwork Description:
Expecting Black Moon is a painting of black circular shapes taking over a horizontally oriented canvas. In the bottom right corner, another circle appears - orange, recalling the radiant star - and the black circles around it start to remind us of the orbiting planets. This cosmos-themed composition slightly reminds us of The Elegy to the Spanish Republic, a Robert Motherwell masterwork cycle. The Eclipsed moons could also symbolize approaching darkness and cataclysm, as in Robert Motherwell's cycle devoted to the disaster of the Spanish Civil War. In 2015-2016, Nicholaas Chiao lived in anticipation of negative global events that later became known as the war in Ukraine.
