Artwork Description:
Expecting Black Moon is a painting of black circular shapes taking over horizontally oriented canvas. In the bottom right corner another circle is present - one of orange color, immediately recalling the Sun, and black circles around it start to remind the orbiting planets. This cosmos-themed composition slightly reminds me of The Elegy to the Spanish Republic, a Robert Motherwell masterwork cycle. The Eclipsed moons could also be a symbol of darkness and tragedy, likewise in Robert Motherwell's cycle devoted to the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. In 2015-2016 Nicholaas Chiao lived in expectation of some negative global events, which later became known as the war in Ukraine.
