Artwork Description:
The Deep Deep Blue is a sculptural self-portrait by the artist. It is painted dark blue, a statue of an artist that emphasizes his muscle strength far beyond what he actually has. Neoclassical sculpture gestures suggest the wish for death of a losing gladiator, a gesture from the ancient Roman tradition of voting in gladiatorial fights. Chiao envisioned himself as a losing fighter. This gesture was an answer from the stronger version of self: become stronger or die.
