Artwork Description:
Six Colors is a geometric abstraction based on the balancing harmony of complementary colors. Complementary colors here create contrast and tension, permitting this canvas to appear like a rhythm of near-primary geometric elements. Violet countered by green, cerulean blue by red, mustard yellow by violet again. For Nicholaas Chiao, simplicity does not mean the unimportance of the idea; on the contrary, the simpler some of his work appears, the bigger the meaning is invested behind it. All life exists between complementary elements: hot and cold, liquid and solid, the lightness of the sun and the shadow of the darkest nights, the orgasm of love and the pain of dying. This painting is an ultimate totemic object for the artist.
As you view this piece, consider your own associations with these color pairs. What emotions do you associate with the dynamic of violet and green or the bold confrontation of red and blue? By inviting yourself into this dialogue with color, you may find your perception enriched, transforming a technical explanation into a collaborative experience as you connect personally with each hue and contrast.
